Island of Rab

Due to its position at the bottom of Velebit and Kamenjak hill the island of Rab is well protected from cold and stormy winds. Kamenjak hill can trick one at first sight showing its denuded side facing the Velebit channel and the Adriatic motorway, however it is a true blessing for the island. During winter it protects Rab from cold and stormy northern wind and it is generally due to Kamenjak hill that the climate of the island is that mild. The island of Rab has always offered something special to its visitors, thanks to its exuberant vegetation mostly, but also due to its sunny and well-indented coast, clear blue sea, attractive natural beauty and a thousand-year culture. Therefore in 1889 city fathers proclaimed Rab tourist and health resort.
With the beginning of this century more and more visitors arrived to Rab, tourism developed suddenly, the number of those looking for holiday on this island increased from one day to another. Blossoming of the tourism came in the period between the two world wars when, in 1936, English king Edward VIII with his wife also visited Rab. English couple were certainly one of the most popular naturists on Rab in that year. The beginning of naturism was marked only two years before that by the opening of the first public naturist beach.
Numerous eminent cultural historians have discovered the cultural heritage of Rab very early. The first cultural historian, writer Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, has described the town of Rab as historically rich, expressing his wish to visit it again. English architect T. G. Jackson in 1887 concluded what many have claimed before and after him: "mysterious medieval town, rather like reminiscence, not reality. according to my taste the most beautiful one of all Dalmatian towns" In its totality the mediaeval town of Rab could be more precious than many individual monuments. Numerous gothic and renaissance palaces of respectable noblemen, monuments from sacral and secular life make Rab rare and special destination. These old edifices, a serious of valuable portals, richly decorated balconies, nice windows and significant inscriptions from different periods of time create a unique ambience, perfection, picturesque atmosphere that will delight every guest.
