Island of Rab

Rab is the northernmost island of Croatian littoral with Mediterranean vegetation. Professor Günter from Graz in 1912 wrote: "For its numerous guests Rab has to thank its rich vegetation, most of all the Komrčar park, a work of senior forester Belija from 1883, to whom the inhabitants of this island will most certainly raise a monument. The visitor returns from the island recovered by the sea air and with long lasting memories of the staying at this splendid place." Indeed the inhabitants of Rab are proud of the blossoming vegetation, of the hundred years old Komrčar park wit its fir trees, hollies, agaves. Also they are proud of the hard working senior forester who gained his monument just as it was foretold by the thrilled travel writer.

Besides the Komrčar park, the southwest coast of the island is rich with various vegetation: fir trees, palm trees, olives, green pastures, vineyards. It seems as if the island has got its name because of its wooded appearance. Old age names such as Arva, Arba, Arbia or Arbitana, in Italian Arbe and in Croatian Rab, come from Illyrian Arb, meaning dark, green, forestry. One of the most beautiful and forest covered areas is Suha Punta with cape Kalifront. Across, there is the northeast part of the island of Rab, the one facing mainland and Velebit mountain, craggy, devoid of any vegetation, crude, seemingly a moon landscape.

Rab is the island of sun and, believe us, those are not just empty words: winters on the island are cosily mild, while summers are hot with the average insolation of 2600 hours of sun per year, meaning over 10 hours per day during summer months. The average temperature in the summer is 26°C while in the winter, as a rule, the lowest temperature never goes under 10°C. Indeed it is a true sunny paradise in any time of the year.
